Feather Tip Wings & BWO Thorax

,

Tip wings can be used whenever you are constructing a standard collar style hackled dry fly.  There are actually a few ways that you can affix the feather tips to the top of the hook whenever attempting this technique.  The way in which you would choose one of these techniques is based around a variety of situations.  The most common is the size of the fly; the smaller the fly the more issues that typically come into play in order to complete a tip wing that will come out correctly.  Three ways in which you can mount the feathers are forward facing, reverse mounting and parachute style.  Another that comes to mind which could use is the side mounted wing which is related primarily to wings that are burned in a wing burner.

Today, we will go over the standard forward approach, with a few added tips that will aid with a variety of fly sizes whenever you are attempting to attach the wing.  I have chosen an Olive variation for the simple fact that in some areas of the country you are already seeing them, and we will too by months end or in the beginning of April.  You can use this same method for making a rather lovely Blue Quill imitation too, just change your the colors accordingly and you will be all set.

Although not necessary, it helps tremendously to size and prepare your wings in advance; preening, trimming and removing excess feather barbs and setting them aside will not only aid in an efficiently tied process, but also reduce your trapping any stray fibers in the winging process.

To further hit home our aforementioned technique, I have completed a video of a great little easy fly pattern that will articulate the concept nicely.  As I stated earlier, these little guys are already hatching in some areas of the country, and will be here very soon so spin a few up for your fly boxes.
